English Lit: Exploring Genre Part A
ages 8-11 (gr.3-6)
Course Description:
Join us in an exploration of genre as we discuss novels and engage in a wide range of meaningful activities. We will be writing a collective fantasy story, taking on the role of the reluctant poet in Love That Dog, diving into conversations about racism and how to act justly, and so much more. Alongside these activities, we will also be playing games with vocabulary and orally practicing the foundations of strong sentence construction using the Hochman Method.

NOTE: Part B will follow in Semester 2 – Part A and Part B can be taken in any order

Time: 11am-12pm ET
Semester 1 Dates: September 13, 2021 – January 24, 2022 (16 weeks – No classes: Oct 11, Nov 22, Dec 27 and Jan 3)

Required Homework:
60-80 pages of reading per week (conventionally, as an audiobook or as a read aloud)
Generate 3 vocabulary words from the weekly reading
Note a few key features of the genre while you read

Part A and B can be taken in any order:
Join us for Part B as we explore genre while discussing novels and engaging in a wide range of meaningful activities. We will be exploring how history and science are brought to life and changed through the lens of fiction, experimenting with different ways of shifting our perceptions of ability, playing with humorous literary devices, reading comics together, and wrapping up the semester with the creation of a comic in a genre of our choice. Alongside these activities, we will also be playing games with vocabulary and orally practicing the foundations of strong sentence construction using the Hochman Method.
